HOW WE STARTED..

My parents' love for Chows started in the late 1970's; they owned a red male and a red female that produced two beautiful litters and have owned and loved many more Chows since. They took a break to focus on raising their families and in 2006, purchased our blue female Asia.

Still having fond memories of raising those pups years ago, they decided to embark on another adventure. In March of 2009, Asia had her first litter of six and another six in 2010. Over the years more chows joined our brood but with our four-legged family growing our house on the outskirts of the city became too small.

In 2015, after a short search they found our current home.. a true country escape in the small community of Dorion, Ontario just 45 minutes outside Thunder Bay. With 76 acres of land there was now plenty of room for our dogs to run and play. As exciting as finding our dream home was, sadly just a month prior we lost our matriarch Asia to cancer. She was 9 years old. We miss her everyday but take great comfort in seeing her sweet personality live on through her puppies. This includes her daughter Storm and granddaughter Elli who carry on her legacy at Bearcrest.

We have since added many more Chows to our family, one from as far away as Hungary in an effort to build quality and varied bloodlines.  We never have more than eight at a time though as we prefer to keep our dogs manageable so we can give them each the quality time they deserve. They are our business but more importantly they are part of our home.

In terms of our puppies, we truly have an emotional investment in every one. We stay with our Moms through their labours and are there from the first contractions to birth. After they are born and have been given ample private time together, we spend the next weeks getting them used to our touch and common household noises. Because we have formed such a close bond with their Moms, they are exceptionally comfortable in our presence with their babies.

Breeding these beautiful dogs is truly a family business; started with my parents and handed down to us. When the pups are born our children, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins drive out to cuddle and play with the babies before they head out to their forever homes. Once the they leave us, we eagerly await confirmation of their arrival to their new parents and a whole new relationship starts as they become a member of the Bearcrest family.

We have met so many truly wonderful people as we've gone along on this journey and we hope you too will join us.
