OUR GUARANTEE

We  guarantee our pups are in excellent health when they leave us. After they leave us, it is in your hands. We will  provide recommendations which must be followed so you do not to void our guarantees. We provide ongoing support for you and keep you informed with any new health information on our Wellness Page.

Our goal is to help you keep your puppy as healthy as possible so they may live a long, happy, full life with you.

WE CANNOT GUARANTEE YOU A PERFECT DOG. SUCH A THING DOES NOT EXIST.

We do guarantee our pups are free of  crippling genetic hip or elbow dysplasia that is evident at age 2. From the age of 18 months to 2 years their growth plates have not fused, and an x-ray must be taken and sent for evaluation to the OFA after 2 years of age. If confirmed, we will replace him/her with the next available pup from an upcoming litter without additional cost to you. This does not include crate and shipping fees if necessary.

We DO NOT guarantee against eye entropion (of any level) as it is not genetic (more on that can be found on the Wellness page). The gene pool for chows is small; we do the best we can, with what we have to work with.

When a pup is purchased as a pet, proof of spay or neuter is to be sent to us at 12+ months of age. Recommendations now, are waiting until one year of age to preserve hormones necessary for growth. Otherwise an alternative surgery may be done before one year. An ovary sparing tubal ligation or vascectomy are good options. Refer to the Wellness page for more information.

Failure to:

  • Provide us with the proper documentation and sending off of necessary x-rays  to the OFA for proper evaluation, if there is an  issue

  • Provide us with a document of proof that spay or neuter was done after 24 months of age. A hormone sparing procedure is recommended as early traditional procedures can result in early bone fusion.

  • Comply with our vaccine recommendations. A record of your vaccine schedule may be requested from your vet as proof that your dog has not been over-vaccinated.

  • Provide the dog with the recommended diet specific to this breed.

WHAT WILL VOID OUR GUARANTEE?

Diet:

Your dog must be fed a good nutritious dog food with the proper levels of protein specific to this breed. It must be free of undesirable, allergy and disease causing ingredients.

We recommend a food with no by-products (corn, wheat or soy) and meats like chicken, lamb, fish etc. should be first on the label with any meat meal a bit farther down the list.

Your dog must be fed the  proper amount of food to maintain a healthy weight.

At this time we recommend Purina Pro Plan FOCUS dog food. Its made from high-quality protein sources and they offer a variety of stages tailored to your dog.

Activity Level in Growing Pups:

New research conclusively suggests environmental influences can play a role in dysplasia that was once considered only to be hereditary. This would include an overweight condition, injury at a young age, overexertion on a hip joint at a young age, ligament tear at a young age, repetitive motion on a forming joint (i.e. jogging with a puppy under the age of one year), and even sliding around on hardwood or laminate floors can be very damaging to a growing dog.

Secondly, care must be taken around times of vaccinating as it causes inflammation in the body so excessive exercise can cause injury. Also, the vaccines contain toxins so their body will need time to recover without more stress. New studies and information are helping to make people more aware of the environment your dog is in, and will help to reduce the occurrence of these problems. It's important to educate yourself in these matters to ensure a long and healthy life for your dog.

Temperment:

Our puppies leave here happy and well socialized; it is your job to keep them that way.

They are handled daily so a level of attention is required to further that. Please refer to our Wellness page for more information.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Vaccines:

Your dog must not be over vaccinated!

The initial round of core vaccines (if possible given separately) include; distemper, parvo, hepatitis and then rabies

(which must be given at a later age and separately from any other vaccines). These will all occur before the age of 6 months. Your dog will NEVER need another vaccine again. This will give him or her immunity for LIFE. The only exception is rabies, and only because that is a legal requirement. It is best to wait as long as is legally possible before giving  additional rabies shots. There is a test called a "Titer Test" that is available to check for immunity before any further vaccines are given. Vaccines cause inflammation, therefore activity must be kept to a low level in the weeks following vaccination to avoid potential injury.

Ronald D. Schultz, Chairman of the University of Wisconsin's Department of Pathobiological Sciences, and the world's foremost expert on dog and cat vaccines wrote in the March 1998 issue of Veterinary Medicine :

"My own pets are vaccinated once or twice as pups and kittens, then never again except for rabies."

If your vet is trying to re-vaccinate your adult dog for anything other than rabies seek a second opinion.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE BREED

  • Chows are a double-coated breed and CANNOT be shaved down. Cutting the second coat can impede its proper regrowth and not only does it protect their skin from UV rays but it also helps keep them cool.

  • Despite the cooling power of their second coat, chows are prone to overheating and must be walked in cooler weather before or after the heat of the day. They must have access to shade if they are kept outdoors and once the temps reach 20 degrees Celsius or higher, we recommend investing in a fan or bringing them indoors. In terms of cold weather, Chows can withstand pretty low temps thanks to that double-coat but beyond -25 C degrees can result in frostbite on less protected areas like their foot pads.

  • Chows have a natural guarding temperament, and while this doesn't mean they are aggressive, they do require a firm, but kind hand to bring them up. We don't always recommend the breed to first-time dog owners as improper handling/training can result in undesirable behaviour. While there's nothing wrong with spoiling your pup, its important to nip bad behaviours in the bud from the beginning, as the more engrained those behaviours become, the harder they will be to change down the road.

  • Because of their stilted gait, Chows DO NOT make ideal running partners, particularly as puppies. The impact of hard ground is tough on their joints, especially as they are growing. They also are more prone to injury so care must be taken when playing even on slippery floors. Games that require darting back and forth should be avoided or closely monitored as well.
